Summary

The 2009 edition of the LSYA Around the Islands race started down wind start in freshening breeze and dark low hanging clouds. The forecast called for 10-15 knots, gusting to 25, with on/off rain throughout the day and with the possibility of thunder storms after midnight. One the wind began to back, Angisina settled in to a fast jib reach to Devils Island, before heading east to Outer Island.

As we approached the Outer, Bill commented that he did not thing he’d ever see the Outer light than early in an Around-the-Islands. The crew celebrated with Lise’s, now world famous, ginger cookies.

We passed through heavy rain approaching Michigan Island before enjoying a steady beat to Grant’s point in warm sunshine and a with beautiful sunset, while avoiding the wind hole at Big Bay.

The final run to home was an exercise in frustration in fading light, and dieing breeze. We set the chute rounding Grant’s, only to have the wind go nosey and then die about 0.2 miles from the finishing line. We sat there for 20 mins, trying to squeeze every 0.1 of boat speed. Finally wind picked up to 10-15, as we crossed the finish line at 22:34.

Notable achievement of the day: boat back to the dock without having broken anything!
