Summary

A VERY exciting day, with an even more exciting finish.

Angisina left the dock with high hopes of a great race. Winds were forecast to be in the 15-20 knot range, with gusts to 25. Although we were not able to get the instruments fixed, were able to install the new main and jib; they looked fabulous.

10:12 am CDT Start Starboard tack, downwind start, 12-15 Kt SSW. Started with jib (new). As the gun went, we hoisted Eduardo (the Spinnaker), rolled in the jib, and set off on a deep run to Red Cliff, in a steady 15 knots. Stayed a bit right of centre

12:46 SW side of Devils (went E of Bear) going light and variable, Angisina within in a few hundred yards of Papa Gaucho (inside), Wylie Coyote (outside), Red Hawk (white; outside), Undaunted (close), Chippewa (outside)... We learned from the locals, they call it Devils for a reason: the wind died and the flies descended, almost eating the crew alive!

15:13 N. Twin abeam after another struggle with light air, this from the N (!) when everything else is S to SSW ??

16:04 Outer Island light abeam.

Next approx 2 hours; went way E, then set course (on Port) to clear Big Bay point (Madeline Island); Val driving until about 18:00. Undaunted had gone way out to the E and was coming back while we followed the rhumb line touching the 20 foot depth contour off Madeline. All jib, on Port.

22:05 Grant's Point Buoy - Chippewa rounded about 40 minutes ahead, Undaunted rounded about 1 min. ahead. Spinnaker up, we were windward, Undaunted came up on us slowly as we caught up, then suddenly had to do a brief jibe onto starboard and back which gave us about 30 more separation. Drag race to finish from 3/4 mile out, we crossed 2 (two) seconds ahead.
