Summary

The Good: the new main sail has arrived, been installed, and looks great.

The Bad: it is 0600 on Saturday and we’re tied up at Lake Head Marina in Duluth.

And the really Ugly: In a major disappointment, Team Angisina was unable to participate in the Duluth Triangle. As the crew was rigging the boat, they noticed most of the instruments, including the wind, speed, depth, and the GPS chart plotter would not power up. In addition, none of the navigation lights worked.

On further investigation, all of the bulbs had blown, and although each instrument was receiving power, none of them would turn on! According to the locals, Duluth had suffered a huge thunder storm on Thursday night. One of the neighbors reported a lightning bolt had stuck the water close to the marina, knocking out power to the dock. Since Angisina was connected to shore power, we suspect this may have resulted in damage to the electronics.

We were able to replace most of the bulbs immediately, but with the forecast calling for fog and/or thunder storms, we did not want to leave port without either of the GPS units. The plan for Saturday is to replace one of the GPS units, and return to Bayfield to switch out some of the instruments with the spares we have in the locker. More to follow.

Good news! Angisina is now tied up at Blackhawk, after a 16-hour delivery on Saturday into Sunday morning. We were able to restart the chart plotter, and replace enough of the navigation bulbs to be legal so that we make the 1200-noon bridge lift on Saturday. The crew sailed most of the afternoon and evening through dense cold fog, until just before sunset. The wind died as we approached Sand Island, resulting in us motoring the rest of the way, arriving shortly after 0420.

Despite several hours of effort on Sunday, we have been unable to restart the sailing instruments (speed, depth, wind etc). While we have enough instrumentation for next weekend, we hope to switch out two displays next Friday evening, in time for ATI and Race Week.

Thanks to everyone who maintained a positive outlook through what was a disappointing and frustrating weekend.
