Summary
Well….who knew that tacking is so complicated…….until we wrote it down!
We had a great turnout for the inaugural Angisina Virtual Training session. After a wonderful pot luck supper, Perry kicked off the evening with some thoughts about the season ahead, including his aspirations (not to be back-of-the pack all year) and expectations (boat positions will be filled on the basis of commitment to the season and aptitude).
The North-U trim training session attended by four of the crew, offered the following three suggestions.
1. Boat handling is at the base of the speed pyramid. Boat speed and tactics are pointless without solid boat handling.
2. Split your crew into two halves. The first deals with the sails you have up now. The second group deals with the sails you need to use next.
3. Do your own job well! Don’t rush in to “help” someone else; otherwise you now have TWO jobs that are messed up.
The training session involved a detailed discussion (and some energetic role playing) of each of the four primary manoeuvres. Each was broken down into three phases, and the ten crew positions. As we talked about each manoeuvre, we wrote each task for each crew position on post-its stuck onto the flip chart. At the end of the evening, we had the beginnings of the Angisina Play Book.
Next, we need to turn the theory into reality during the scheduled practice weekend of 5/15.
