Summary
After more than a fortnight on the water, Angisina is safely tied up at Black Hawk in Bayfield following a successful Duluth-to-Bayfield last weekend.
The crew left Duluth at 10:00 under bright sunny skies, with a steady 10 knot breeze from the south east. After a good start, Perry headed up aggressively to force Wiley away. The steady breeze continued throughout the rest of the morning; and Angisina made great upwind progress averaging around 7 knots of boat speed.
During the early afternoon, Angisina followed what appeared to be a persistent lift towards Port Wing, until the wind died close in shore. During the costly tack back out into the breeze, we saw boats pass us further offshore.
As dusk fell, the wind clocked around, resulting in another upwind leg in gusty winds up to 20 knots, driving rain, lightning, a double reefed main, and 1/2 furled jib. Oh, and 8.2 knots on the Wee-O-meter!
As the new breeze settled in, we shook out the reefs and made steady progress through the islands before storming across the finish line at 03:58. We were just 5 minutes behind Harrier (although we should correct over), and ahead of Wiley and one or two others. All-in-all, it was a very satisfying day.
After docking, the crew raised a toast to the King family, and Phil, for allowing us to share the adventure on such a wonderful vessel. We also raised to toast to Adam; Gary’s brother-in-law and Jason’s best friend who passed away earlier in the week.
