Chippewa needs crew!
Hello Angisina crew. If Angisina is not going to Thunder Bay Chippewa needs your help. We are going to Thunder Bay for the PHRF's and we are racing the International. We need crew. You do need a passport. We will be organizing transportation so no cars get left in Thunder Bay if you do the International. IF you are interested please go to chippewaracing.org or email me. Thank you all!
Just wanted to drop a line and thank everyone for a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Though results on the course weren't what we were hoping for, the results OFF the course were. Everybody had a great time, and that is after all, what matters most. We'll get 'em next time!

Bring it on!
The 2010 season is upon us. The owners have invested in new sail-power, and other goodies. Angisina looks terrific, with the help of many hands. Some of the crew spent the winter in classes, and the gym. Now is the time to put it all together. Mum might just get a little splash, but Perry IS going in the water this year!

Dumping the boat owner in the water
Hey team.... We need to win races... tradition calls for dumping the boat owner in the water on the first gun he/she gets. Maybe we will do something more pleasant to Mom... but Perry? He is asking for it... see below???? I cannot wait!

Is it hibernation?... :)
Was just checking out the '10 schedule and all and noticed the message board - nothing since Christmas '09 - Did life really freeze to a stop for the Winter months?...

Another Good Memory
I also had the best Race Week in the five that I have done (earning a nickname AND receiving the coveted red Mt. Gay hat!). My memories of that week were summed up in a list I emailed to all of you upon returning home, look back on it if you don't remember it!

Best Memory of the Season
I'm not sure how many of you know that the Trans happened right in between my decision not to return to TCU this fall and my decision to attend a 3 month discipleship program with a group called Steiger. During the few night shifts we had, when the wind was still and the fog was swirling around us, I had much time to contemplate a lot of big thoughts about my life. "Had I made the right decision?" "Was I crazy?" "How would I be able to explain to other people why I was doing what I was?" It seems fitting to think big thoughts on a big lake. I had time to realize how blessed I am. Not many people get a chance to see the amazing things we saw during that race. In particular, at about 4:30am on Monday, Perry put me on the helm. The fog was light and my point of reference was a bright star (possibly a planet) low on the horizon. During the hour or so that I was on the helm I got to feel the Sun come up and surround us with light (I couldn't actually see it because it was behind me). It was so silent and in those moments as I felt Angisina's wheel under my gloved hands, I felt an overwhelming peace and confidence in the decisions I had made in the last couple of weeks. I could not imagine sharing that experience with a better crew of people and I look forward to sharing more of them with you all.

The Angisina Shrimp party
While I was talking with Carmella in Frenchy's living room enjoying shrimp from 'Nick the Main' we watched PJ put a strawberry in his mouth for a few minutes and then put it back into the fruit bowlon the coffee table. Moments later as Carmen Velarde is saying her good byes we watched her pick up that strawberry and eat it.

Moment of pride
When another Race Week skipper, not sure his name, told me, "Perry, you have the happiest crew I have ever seen". What could be a better compliment to our program than that? We are all, in the end, here to have fun. Good competition is certainly a part of that...being at the back of the pack for too long is not the way to sustain a happy crew. Ah, success! We have happy people!

The "Look" from Valerie
During a bouy race, being prepared to go below and perform as the sewer rat. Watching the cues, looking over at Val, preparing to pull the kite down, she looks at me and nods as I go below and do my job. Understanding that simple moment from across the deck. Seems so simple now. At the time I felt great! I love the fluid teamwork. thanks Val

The head
The first time I went to the bathroom with the boat at a fairly significant heel. Trying to maintain my position and not "spill" on the floor. Laughing out loud in the head. Looking out the window and it is level with the water. Okay, now we're having fun !

6/27/09 AIS Race, my dream comes true
Saturday 0830, standing in a room filled with anticipation, none greater than mine. Introduced to Perry King, Angisina captain, by Pete Kulenkamp who I know from North Coast Community Sailing. I was thinking, "If this seems like too much danger and risk I can just go home and forget the whole thing". Shake hands with Perry, they ask my birthdate for the form. I want to say 8/20/69 instead of 59 but I don't... am I too old to start??? Not a hint of hesitation anywhere Perry says "head over that that boat" points out the window. "find Andy, I'll be there soon. We're glad to have you". I walk over, scared, so excited I can't believe this is really going to happen; finally ! I think, "I can still bail out and go home ,,, talk myself out of it as I think of my late, dear brother Dennis and his love of this sport. He taught me to be brave while skiing, sailing, scuba diving and swimming. (I kept him close the whole day). Walking up to the dock, meeting Andy and the crew. Such a warm reception, busy, excited, teamwork in action. Circle time on the dock, introductions all around. I am # 11, still unsure, trepidation...excitement...slight nausea... my turn "Maureen, I'm a nurse in the ER in Ashland" the cheers go up and I am so incredibly relieved and joyful and on top of the world in that moment...I know that this is the feeling of belonging to a team. No turning back from that moment on. What a rush. I'm the luckiest person in the world. Ask for what you want... watch what you wish for ! dreams come true.

Memory 4 of 4
Trans. My 4th. That alone is a memory. But also Val's stunning endurance on the first night of the delivery. Beth's determination in the face of seasickness and a chemically burned face on the delivery. Sharing watch in the Ontonagon river to make sure we didn't pull free and drift to the railroad bridge. Going into Bondar Marina when some clown puts his fishing boat right in front of us as we're crossing the 2 to 3 knot current at full throttle: Val screaming at him, almost literally willing him out of the way, while Bill calmly called position for me as I drove. Finding the source of the mast noise - after Bill had gone up the mast to no avail. John's "Trans-Inferior chart" and smooth drving. Responding to Perry's requests for times and fixes as he worked - and succeeded - in finding some air on a very light air 0200-0600 watch. Seeing Andy fix batten pockets and jib foot with grace under pressure. Seeing everybody work to keep the boat moving when the finish was in sight and the wind went dead. Hearing Corry and Cyd share joy at simply being there ("Do you know what we are doing?" "Sailing across Lake Superior!" Big grins.) Finishing.

Memory 3 of 4
Race week Race 6, the most totally bizarre course I've ever seen an RC call, with the result of two spinnaker sets on a supposedly UPWIND Leg and some truly astonishingly fast single- handed spinnaker packing by Bill

Memory 2 of 4
Race week race 5, staying within roughly 10 boat lengths of Chewbacca for more than a mile, then getting an amazing lift to the mark. This leg, more than any other one, proved to me that we are getting where we want to be.

Memory 1 of 4
Around the Islands, downwind leg after the start, a really fun time personally getting to contribute by flying the chute in light air, something I like to do. (Also was given a memorable opening for a zinger by Katelyn's marshmellow remark about "going down for me".)

2009 Season Memory 3-of-4
Trans Superior: 04:00 Sunday morning. The rude awakening from Frenchie, and the realization we were miles from shore in 40 knots and the middle of a thunderstorm. With Cool-hand-John on the helm and Perry alongside; I learned something about myself and my crewmates that night. Y’all know who you are.

2009 Season Memory 2-of-4
Race to Saxon: light and fluky conditions heading into Saxon on a tight spin reach; trying to catch Undaunted and Voyager. They went towards the shore and appeared to be pulling away. The Angisina crew was not giving up that easily. We worked our butts off to squeeze every 0.01 of boat speed with the Chippy crew screaming their encouragement to us as we ghosted across the line just feet ahead of Undaunted! The rum tasted soooooo good that night.

2009 Season Memory 1-of-4
Friday of Race week: sunny and breezy conditions running down to the finish line off Grants point, neck and neck (on the water) with White Red Hawk and Undaunted behind us. Even though we had the Hawk beaten on time, the whole crew gave 110% effort to ensure we beat them over the line as well. Just magical!

To Mr Anonymous
Hi Mr Anonymous, I got a call from Crew Boss letting me know about the wonderful and generous offer. This touched my heart to see how someone cares so much. I am so happy to see the Angisinian crew is made of such wonderful people. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart and I hope I will soon be able to guess (or maybe you will reveal yourself) so I can thank you in person. I really really really appreciate it! Valerie

Nonsense
It is I who owe everybody involved this season. Angisina would not have had the great strides it has experienced without all of you who helped make it happen. It truly warms me to see such a great group of people who are so committed and passionate (disregarding my undergarments) about the program. Thank you all for a great season, I look forward to more of it!

Saxon; brief report on knee; other
Thanks to Andy for posting the race summary and Perry for a personal email about the weekend. Sounds like a very nice call to stay outside in light air now that cooler season has arrived up there (its just beginning to be in the mid-80s for daytime highs here). Limited warming makes in shore breezes very hard to predict. Also I like the call to be careful in Sunday's race. While cooped up with the knee surgery (see next), I've been reading a lot about race strategies. A repeated theme is go for the high-probability of success. In tough weather (I was watching the various Lake Superior weather sites and hoping you didn't get slammed), that means caution to keep the crew ok and the boat in one piece. We all know of one or more "bold but stupid" boats - this way is better. Today, 6 days after the arthroscopic knee surgery, I'm out of the "immobilizer" (boy is that name fitting) brace and off crutches. No pain at all and the physical therapist is pleased with progress. Finally, like Bill's message a month ago, I owe all of you, but most especially Perry, thanks for two memorable sessions on the big lake this summer. peace, Sam

Trans Thoughts from Bill Powers
I owe thanks to all of you with whom I sailed. I don't think I have ever finished a Trans without reflecting on a thing to two learned and a surprise or two from the big lake. The surprise this time was in the brevity and intensity of wind changes in fog patches. I associate fog with wind and sometimes with a wind change. Once or twice this time, though, sailing into a fog patch was sailing into a notable change, once to the point of requiring a reef. Sam probably remembers being slammed one time as we left fog, but not in the brief and sharp ways we found this time. And I learned a little about crew mix. I have not before been with a crew so varied in age (though I now drive some of that age variety on any boat I board), sex, or experience. It worked well. I was glad to have been a part of it. So thanks to all. It may even happen again. Bill Powers

Thank you all!
I wanted to take a minute to thank you all for a great ATI and Race Week! As I already mentioned, we are gaining ground and I couldn't be more excited about how we're doing. To put things in perspective, Dave West won the Rolex Cup in the BVI's this year! That's the kind of competition we are up against. Anytime we can be gaining ground on people like that, we have only to be proud of ourselves. It couldn't happen without the best crew around! Thank you all again. Perry
